Nyrstar Hobart Zinc Smelter Robotic Dross Skimming Case Study

This document describes how Nyrstar's Hobart smelter in Tasmania automated the hazardous manual skimming of dross from molten zinc ingot casting using four ABB industrial robots, improving worker safety and product quality. The project, led by Senior Project Manager Michael Kupsch and systems integrator Lewis Australia, achieved a 60% reduction in reject-weight ingots and eliminated 16 high-risk jobs.
